“Why?” asked Clemmie.

“It wants to help you see better at night.” I had learned from Aunt Nora that carrots are good for eyes and skin.

“But why does it like me?” Clemmie had picked up the little piece of carrot and was looking at it very closely.

“Because you are good,” I told him.

“No, I’m a bad pirate,” Clemmie said, and popped the carrot into his mouth.

“Bad pirates are really good pirates who just forgot about the goodness inside of them,” I said, pushing another piece of carrot over to him.

“Maybe they need more carrots,” Clemmie said, munching.

Mama turned around from stirring the pot on the woodstove and said in her tired voice, “Don’t eat all the carrots. We need them for the stew.”

“They’re turning me into a good pirate, Mama.”

“Well, something better,” she mumbled.

“Do you want to hear the song I learned today?” I asked, trying to make Mama feel happier.

“Yes!” Clemmie said.

So I taught him “Great Big House” and the dance steps we learned:
